Other projects that Mr. Lafayette has worked on

From presenting a workshop on bringing civic education to life at the American Bar Association's Conference on Law-Related Education in Chicago to celebrating Constitution Day with an class-wide assembly featuring local attorneys to tracking the 2008 Presidential Election culminating with a school-wide viewing of the Inauguration in the auditorium.  René Lafayette has brought history to life for his students, positively contributing to school climate.

Constitution Day Assembly

Wanting to raise the profile for how Constitution Day is celebrated, he organized an annual grade-wide assembly that featured local attorneys addressing various aspects of the Constitution and then answering questions from students.  Having prepared before the assembly, the lawyers addressed a wide variety of issues.

American Bar Association Conference

Lafayette submitted a proposal for an academic paper to the American Bar Association, entitled "Creating Active Citizens Through Education." Mr. Lafayette was also invited to present the paper and a workshop at the ABA's 26th Annual Conference on Law-Related Education in Chicago, IL.  It was a first for a Northbridge High School faculty member to do so.

The Active Classroom

Current events.  Washington.  Boston. Your community.  The State of the Union to the Financial Town Meeting.  Reading newspapers or e-papers.  Robust discussion moderated by civility and respect.

A dream, an illusion?  No.  Reality in Mr. Lafayette's classroom.  It can happen; it has and will again.

2008 Presidential Election

First came the campaign, then the election, finally the Inauguration and the first 100 days.  The year was 2008, the major party candidates were John McCain and Barack Obama.

My students had election night parties and ultimately there was a school wide assembly with the broadcast of Inauguration in ceremonies in the school auditorium on 2009.
